The world is an oyster of unique experiences and beautiful places. Sadly, there is not enough time on the planet for us to see everything we want to see. Everyone has different criteria for what they may want to experience and visit, but the following three attractions are the most popular attractions in the world, and everyone should see them at least once in their lifetime.
Nestled in the lush mountain side of the Peruvian Andes, the finely crafted stone fortress of Machu Picchu spans over five miles. With over 3000 stone steps connecting the different parts of the monuments, this is one of the most enigmatic and popular human made wonders of the world.
Historians theorize that Machu Picchu was used as a royal estate or blessed religious location for Inca leaders, and consists of over 150 buildings, including baths, houses, shrines, and sanctuaries.
Visitors to the mountaintop citadel can enjoy discovering the walls, terraces, stairways, and ramps of Machu Picchu, which all merge effortlessly into its natural surroundings. You can take a walk around to observe the fine masonry of the Inca people, who designed their buildings in such a way that the stones fit together without having to use any mortar.
Several different parts of the fortress have been identified by archaeologists, including a farming area, a residential district, a royal quarter, and a sacred space. The most prominent and well-known buildings in Machu Picchu include the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana stone, which is a granite rock that is believed to have been sculpted to function as a solar clock or calendar.
Located on the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra, India, the Taj Mahal is a sprawling white marble mausoleum that comprises almost 17 acres of land. Considered to be the greatest success of Indo-Islamic architecture, this majestic building took over 14 years to build. An interesting read about it’s history can be found online .
Despite needing many repairs and conservation work to maintain the integrity of the building, the tomb, mosque, main gate, guest house, and the general complex of the Taj Mahal are still classified as authentic, with none of the initial qualities of the structure being compromised.
Walking through the Great Gate, the feeling of serenity in the mausoleum grounds can be felt immediately. The symmetrical Persian-style garden features lush lawns and shimmering waterways that are divided by wide paths that visitors can walk along.
Two almost identical buildings border the mausoleum: the one being a mosque and the other an assembly hall. The left-hand side of the structure also features a small museum that houses the original plans for the construction of the Taj Mahal.
The main tourist attraction at the Taj Mahal is what is now known as the Princess Diana Bench, located on a stage above the central waterway on the far end of the pool. There’s also a hotel by the same name which is absolutely beautiful and which will remind you of Jamaica hotels.
The Great Wall of China
A symbol of the Chinese endurance and strength, the Great Wall of China is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. Comprising of many walls and forts spanning over 13,171 miles, the Great Wall was built from stone, brick, packed earth, wood, and other materials.
The Wall was originally built to protect the Chinese empire from invaders, and it is believed that more than 400,000 people died during the building of the Wall.
The Great Wall of China is acknowledged as one of the most extraordinary architectural achievements in history. In 1987, the Great Wall was declared a World Heritage Site, and it is believed that it is the only human-made structure in the world that can be seen from space.
Many sections of the wall have deteriorated and disintegrated over the years due to lack of upkeep, but in the 1950’s, a large section of the wall known as Badaling, located about 45 miles northwest of Beijing was rebuilt and is now the most popular site for tourists. At this location, you can see miles of the Wall across the mountains.
If you find yourself in one of the above countries, be sure to visit these amazing wonders of the world. They are not only a sight to behold but a unique experience that cannot be had at any other location.
